Performance exhaust systems require silencer wool apart from the original Vespa items (PX/T5/smallframe) over time this can be burned away or becomes clogged up with oil, due to over-rich carburation. The exhaust becomes louder and increasingly ineffective, therefore requiring replacement. It has proved helpful in the past to wrap the wool loosely around the central perforated exhaust exit tube during reconstruction of the silencer unit.
