The gear selector cruciform has one of the toughest jobs in the whole gearbox. The gear selector cruciform is put in position within the desired gear cog on the output shaft every time you change gear and ensures that the power of the motor can be effectively transmitted through the desired gear, to the output shaft, and finally the rear wheel.
The intervals at which the cruciform should be replaced are determined by the mileage of the motor. The life of an average cruciform is usually over after 10-12000 km or 6-7500 miles. Broken or incorrect selector boxes or rods, wrongly assembled output shaft assemblies, or badly adjusted gear cables all shorten the life of an average cruciform quite drastically. This leads to the gears not staying in position and in a worst case scenario create much more extensive damage within your motor. For this reason the cruciform should be replaced during every major service of your motor.
