Description
With the introduction of the Vespa GL around 1962 a new type of brake drum for the rear wheel shaft was established, which is still used today in almost the same design.
With the exception of the GS160/SS180 and COSA models, this drum type was installed in all Vespa scooters from 1962 on with horizontal cylinder (Vespa Largeframe).
1962-1984: drum with Ø27mm oil seal running surface, crown nut secured with split pin. Tightening torque: 75-90NM1984-
1988: Drum with Ø30mm oil seal running surface, hexagon nut secured with cage and split pin. Tightening torque: 90-110NM
1988-today: Drum with Ø31,5mm unground running surface for felt ring, hexagon nut with cage and split pin secured (the actual shaft seal is located in the gearbox). Tightening torque: 90-110NM
The continuously increasing flange diameter (from Ø27 to Ø31.5mm) allows a much more stable brake drum flange. The models with only Ø27mm tend to expand quickly if the tightening torque was too low. A spread brake drum flange can be recognized by a rear wheel that keeps loosening, despite a correctly tightened rear wheel nut.
In this case only a timely replacement of the brake drum can help, otherwise the splines of the main shaft is affected and must also be replaced. For stability reasons it is always recommended to change to a drum with at least 30mm flange diameter.
UPGRADE old to new (27 > 30/31,5mm):
The more stable drum of the PX Lusso models from 1984-1988 can also be used on the older years of manufacture with Ø27mm drum, provided that the shaft seal ring of the Lusso models with Ø30mm and the washer of the models from 1984 onwards are also used there.
With a fully enclosed rear wheel bearing (6204 2RS) a brake drum of the models from 1988 up (with Ø31,5mm felt ring) can also be used without a shaft seal. here please check the bearing for tightness in regular intervals.
DOWNGRADE new to old (31,5 > 30mm): The newest type (1988-today) has no seal running surface and is therefore unsuitable for the combination with a shaft seal.
The Lusso drum from 1984-1988 can also be used here and converted to a conventional shaft seal. If the internal shaft sealing ring is omitted here, make sure to close the drip hole in the housing.
